A beginner trader may often need to move money quickly from a savings account to another bank account or trading-related payment account. In such cases, IMPS is one of the fastest ways to transfer funds. While using IMPS, you may come across the term MMID in IMPS and wonder what it means.
MMID is used when money is transferred through IMPS using a mobile number instead of an account number and IFSC. For new traders and investors, understanding MMID helps avoid payment errors, especially when moving funds for market-related needs. This article explains what MMID is, how it works, how to generate it, and when it is useful.
MMID stands for Mobile Money Identifier or Mobile Money Identification Number. It is a 7-digit number issued by a bank to a customer for IMPS transactions through mobile banking. NPCI describes MMID as a 7-digit number provided by the bank after a customer registers a mobile number for IMPS.
In simple terms, MMID helps identify the bank account linked to a registered mobile number. When someone wants to send money through IMPS using your mobile number, they may need your:
SBI explains that IMPS can transfer funds using either a mobile number and MMID or an account number and IFSC.
So, MMID is not the same as your account number, IFSC, UPI ID, OTP, or PIN. It is only an identifier used in a specific IMPS transfer method.
MMID-based IMPS works when the sender transfers money using the receiver’s mobile number and MMID.
The bank account must be linked to the customer’s registered mobile number. Without a registered mobile number, MMID-based transfer may not work.
Once the account and mobile number are linked, the bank can issue a 7-digit MMID. SBI states that the first four digits of MMID identify the bank offering IMPS.
To receive money through this route, the receiver shares the registered mobile number and MMID. HDFC Bank says the beneficiary must have a registered mobile number and a valid 7-digit MMID for IMPS.
The sender opens mobile banking or net banking, selects IMPS, and chooses the mobile number and MMID option.
Once the bank verifies the details, the money is credited to the receiver’s bank account. ICICI Bank describes IMPS as a real-time interbank fund transfer system available 24×7.
The process can differ from bank to bank, but most banks allow customers to generate or view MMID through mobile banking, net banking, SMS, ATM, or branch support.
Most banks provide the MMID option inside their mobile banking app.
Common steps:
This method is useful for customers who use mobile banking regularly.
You can also generate MMID through internet banking.
Common steps:
HDFC Bank allows customers to view or generate an MMID through NetBanking by going to the account section and the account information tab.
Some banks allow customers to receive an MMID by sending an SMS from the registered mobile number.
For example, ICICI Bank says customers can generate MMID by sending MMID <space> last 4 digits of account number to 9222208888.
Some customers may prefer offline support. In that case, they can visit the bank branch or use bank-supported ATM services, if available.
This is useful for users who are not comfortable with net banking or mobile banking.
Assume Rohan is a beginner trader in India. He keeps most of his money in a savings account and moves funds only when he wants to trade.
He has two bank accounts:
Rohan wants to transfer ₹25,000 from Account A to Account B using IMPS. His second account has:
He opens his mobile banking app, selects IMPS, chooses the mobile number and MMID option, enters the details, checks the beneficiary name, and confirms the transfer.
The money reaches Account B quickly. After that, he can add funds to his trading account using the payment method supported by his broker. Alice Blue allows users to add funds through UPI, net banking, or bank transfer methods such as IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS.
This example shows that MMID can help in moving money between bank accounts. Still, for broker deposits, always follow the payment route shown on the broker platform.
MMID has seven digits and is issued by the bank. It is linked to the customer’s bank account and registered mobile number.
MMID is mainly used for IMPS transfers through the mobile number and MMID method.
The mobile number used for the transaction must be registered with the bank.
If a customer has more than one account linked to the same mobile number, each account may have a different MMID. HDFC Bank also notes that the beneficiary can have a unique MMID for each bank account linked to the mobile number.
MMID is not an OTP, MPIN, ATM PIN, UPI PIN, or net banking password. It helps identify an account for receiving funds.
MMID allows a person to receive funds using a mobile number and MMID instead of sharing the account number and IFSC.
Since IMPS works in real time, it can help traders or investors move money quickly between bank accounts.
IMPS is available 24×7, which means it can be used outside normal banking hours.
People who use mobile banking often may find MMID-based IMPS useful for quick transfers.
A trader may need to move funds before placing a trade or meeting a margin need. In such cases, IMPS can be useful if the bank and broker payment processes support it.
If the sender enters the wrong mobile number or MMID, the transaction may fail or get rejected.
MMID is needed only when IMPS is done using a mobile number and MMID. It is not needed when using the account number and IFSC.
Each bank may have its own IMPS transfer limits. The limit may also depend on the transaction channel, account type, and beneficiary status.
Some banks may charge for IMPS transfers depending on the amount, account type, and transfer method. ICICI Bank states that IMPS may be chargeable for some account types and that charges can vary.
Your broker may ask you to pay through UPI, net banking, or bank transfer using your account number and IFSC. Do not use MMID unless the payment route clearly supports it.

MMID identifies the receiver’s bank account. MPIN is used to approve mobile banking transactions. They are different.
MMID is required only for IMPS using a mobile number and MMID. If you are using an account number and IFSC, MMID is not required.
You may share MMID to receive funds, but never share OTP, MPIN, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, card details, or net banking password.
MMID is linked to the registered mobile number. If your mobile number has changed, update it with the bank before using this method.
Always check the beneficiary name before confirming the transfer. This reduces the chance of sending money to the wrong account.
If your broker asks for UPI or account number and IFSC, use that method. MMID should be used only when it is clearly supported.
