You apply for an IPO expecting a quick listing gain. The grey market premium looks good. Shares list, and the price drops below the issue price. In 2024, nearly 1 in 4 mainboard IPOs opened below their issue price on day one. This gap happens more often than many retail investors expect.
Basis risk in IPOs is the gap between the IPO issue price and the actual market price when the stock starts trading on the listing day.
Basis risk means the price you lock in during an IPO does not match the market price on listing day. Companies set a price band, like Rs 100 to Rs 110. You bid at the cutoff. An allotment gives you shares at that fixed rate. Listing lets supply and demand decide the opening price.
If it opens at Rs 90, you face a paper loss. The basis is a Rs 10 gap. Investor mood, institutional participation, and market conditions decide the final listing price, not the IPO price itself.
Paytm’s IPO was priced at Rs 2,150 per share and attracted massive attention before listing. The grey market premium remained positive before listing, and expectations for strong listing gains were high.
But when the stock finally listed, it opened at Rs 1,564 on NSE, around 27% below the issue price.
Investors who applied expecting listing gains faced immediate losses on day one. The IPO became one of the most widely discussed examples of how IPO pricing and actual market demand can differ sharply once trading begins.
The Paytm listing showed that strong brand recognition and market buzz do not guarantee a strong listing.
Listing below the issue price creates an immediate paper loss and may trigger panic selling among new allottees.
Factor | IPO Listing (Basis Risk) | Grey Market Premium (GMP) |
What it measures | Actual gap between the issue price and the first traded price on the exchange | Informal pre-list bids showing traders’ expectations |
Reliability | Determined by real exchange trades, it reflects the true outcome | Unregulated and changeable; a sentiment signal, not a guarantee |
Main drivers | Real buyers and sellers on listing day (institutions, retail) | Off-exchange speculators and short-term traders |
Typical behaviour | Can open at a discount or a premium, depending on fundamentals and demand | Can be positive, negative, or flat, and changes frequently based on grey market sentiment |
How to use it | Check category-wise subscription and market mood to judge the likely listing direction | Use as a sentiment indicator; confirm with subscription and fundamentals |
Example insight | Strong institutional demand usually reduces downside risk on listing | Paytm’s GMP stayed positive before listing, but the stock still fell 27% on listing day due to weak institutional conviction |
Basis risk in IPOs is the gap between what investors expect and what the market is actually willing to pay on listing day.
GMP and subscription numbers can help measure sentiment, but they cannot replace basic checks on valuation, financials, institutional demand, and overall market conditions.
If you want a simpler way to track upcoming IPOs, monitor subscription updates, and check allotment status, Alice Blue can help you manage everything in one place.
An IPO can list below the issue price when buyers are not willing to pay the expected valuation on listing day. This usually happens when the issue looks expensive, market sentiment weakens, or selling pressure becomes high after listing.
No. Grey market premium only reflects early sentiment, and that sentiment can change quickly. A strong GMP does not guarantee positive listing performance.
A significant number of SME IPOs in 2025 listed below their issue price as weaker market sentiment and aggressive valuations affected demand. Mainboard IPO performance remained mixed, with stronger institutional demand helping some larger issues avoid deep listing discounts.
You can reduce basis risk by comparing valuations with listed peers, checking category-wise subscription demand, and avoiding IPOs driven mainly by hype. It also helps to limit exposure instead of committing too much capital to one issue.
That depends on the company’s business quality and valuation. A weak listing does not always mean the business is weak, but expensive valuations and weak financials require caution.
