Get your salary on the 1st. You want to invest. Should you pick a mutual fund SIP? A PPF account. Or just put money in a bank FD.
Each option claims to give good returns. But they work completely differently. Some are risky. Some are safe. Some give more money over time.
This guide shows you exactly how Mutual Fund SIP vs PPF vs FD: Which Gives Better Returns in India compares with real numbers and simple explanations.
By the end, you will know what each investment gives after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years. Which one beats inflation and which loses to it? When to use each option for your goals. The real tax impact on your returns.
Let us start with the basics.
SIP or Systematic Investment Plan in Mutual Funds: You invest a fixed amount each month into a mutual fund. For equity funds, your money buys stocks. Returns depend on how the stock market performs. No guaranteed returns. Historically, equity SIPs give 10 to 15 percent over 10 years or more. Nifty 50 has delivered 12.6 percent annualized over 10 years and 11.9 percent in 2025. If you want to understand mutual fund types before starting SIP, read Alice Blue’s blog on Mutual Fund Categories India 2026 Explained.
PPF or Public Provident Fund: A government savings scheme. You deposit money once a year with a minimum of 500 rupees and a maximum of 1.5 lakh rupees. The government gives you a fixed interest of 7.1 percent per annum. Zero risk since it is backed by the Government of India. Money stays locked for 15 years.
FD or Fixed Deposit: You put money in a bank for a fixed time from 7 days to 10 years. The bank gives you a fixed interest rate, with current rates at 6 to 7 percent for most banks. Very low risk. But interest is fully taxable.
These three exist because people have different needs. Some want safety. Some want growth. Some want easy access to money.
Direct answer. SIP gives better returns for long-term goals of 10 years or more. PPF is better if you want zero risk. FD is better for short-term goals of 1 to 3 years.
Here is why. SIP compounds at 12 percent, PPF compounds at 7.1 percent, and FD compounds at 6.5 percent. Over time, the gap grows.
How SIP Works in Practice
Why SIP works. When markets fall, you buy more units at lower prices. When markets rise, you buy fewer units. Over time, this reduces your average cost. This is called rupee cost averaging.
Before you start investing in SIP, you need a demat account. Read Alice Blue’s blog Demat Account Opening in India 2026: Complete Step-by-Step Guide to learn how to open an account in under 10 minutes.
How PPF Works Step by Step
PPF rates change quarterly. The current rate is 7.1 percent for the April-June 2026 quarter.
How FD Works
Bank FD rates dropped after the RBI cut the repo rate to 6 percent in April 2025. Most banks now offer 6 to 7 percent for 1 to 3-year tenures.
Here is what actually happens with real numbers. Invest 5000 rupees per month or 60000 rupees per year for different time periods:
Time Period | Total Invested | SIP at 12 Percent | PPF at 7.1 Percent | FD at 6.5 Percent After 30 Percent Tax |
5 Years | 3,00,000 rupees | 4,12,432 rupees | 3,70,281 rupees | 3,28,571 rupees |
10 Years | 6,00,000 rupees | 11,61,695 rupees | 8,92,050 rupees | 7,39,010 rupees |
15 Years | 9,00,000 rupees | 25,22,880 rupees | 16,27,284 rupees | 12,51,717 rupees |
20 Years | 12,00,000 rupees | 49,95,740 rupees | 26,63,315 rupees | 18,92,173 rupees |
Returns calculated at SIP 12 percent per annum, PPF 7.1 percent per annum, and FD 6.5 percent per annum, with 30 percent tax on interest.
What these numbers show.
After 5 years, SIP gives 1.1 times more than PPF and 1.3 times more than FD.
After 10 years, SIP gives 1.3 times more than PPF and 1.6 times more than FD.
After 15 years, SIP gives 1.6 times more than PPF and 2 times more than FD.
After 20 years, SIP gives 1.9 times more than PPF and 2.6 times more than FD.
The gap widens over time because of compounding and higher SIP returns.
Inflation in India runs around 3.5 to 6 percent per year. The current inflation rate in April 2026 is 3.48 percent.
At 6 percent inflation, 1 lakh rupees today buys what 31000 rupees buys in 20 years.
Now look at after-tax returns:
Investment | Nominal Return | After-Tax Return | vs Inflation |
FD at 6.5 Percent | 6.5 Percent | 4.55 Percent at 30 Percent tax | LOSES by 1.45 Percent |
PPF at 7.1 Percent | 7.1 Percent | 7.1 Percent tax-free | BEATS by 1.1 Percent |
SIP at 12 Percent | 12 Percent | 11 Percent after LTCG | BEATS by 5 Percent |
FDs seem safe. But after tax, you are actually losing purchasing power. Your money grows, but buys less over time. This is inflation risk.
PPF barely beats inflation. SIP beats inflation by 4 to 5 percent. That is actually building more money.
Feature | SIP Equity Mutual Fund | PPF | Fixed Deposit |
Expected Return | 10 to 15 Percent per annum | 7.1 Percent per annum | 6 to 7 Percent per annum |
Risk Level | The market moves up and down | Zero government-backed | Very Low |
Lock-in Period | None except ELSS 3 years | 15 years | As chosen flexible |
Tax on Returns | LTCG 12.5 Percent above 1.25 lakh per year | Fully tax-free EEE status | Fully taxable as per the slab |
After-Tax Return | 10 to 12 Percent | 7.1 Percent | 4 to 5 Percent for the 30 Percent tax bracket |
Investment Limit | No limit | 1.5 lakh per year | No limit |
Liquidity | High redeem in 1 to 3 days | Low partial after 7 years | Medium break with penalty |
Inflation Protection | Yes beats by 4 to 5 Percent | Partial barely beats | No losses to inflation |

The answer depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance:
Your Goal | Best Option | Why |
Long-term wealth 10 years or more | SIP | 1.6 to 2 times higher returns than PPF or FD over 15 to 20 years |
Retirement corpus | SIP plus PPF | SIP for growth, PPF for safety, and tax-free income |
Child education 10 years or more | SIP | Higher corpus for large future expenses |
Safety first | PPF | Zero risk with guaranteed 7.1 Percent returns |
Short-term goal: 1 to 3 years | FD | Capital protection with predictable returns |
Emergency fund | FD | Easy access with no market risk |
Tax saving plus good returns | ELSS SIP | 3-year lock-in with 12 Percent plus returns and Section 80C benefit |
In short, for long-term wealth, SIP in equity mutual funds gives better returns. Over 15 years, a 5000 rupee monthly SIP creates 62 lakh rupees more than an FD and 9 lakh rupees more than a PPF.
But smart investors do not pick just one. They use all three for different goals:
Choose SIP if You:
Choose PPF if You:
Choose FD if You:
Need money in 1 to 3 years. Choose FD because capital protection matters more than returns.
Need money in 5 to 10 years. Choose a mix of SIP at 60 Percent plus PPF at 40 Percent for the balance of growth and safety.
Need money in 10 years or more. Choose SIP at 80 Percent plus PPF at 20 Percent for maximum wealth creation.
Want zero risk. Choose PPF only with guaranteed 7.1 Percent returns.
Want the highest returns. Choose SIP only with 10 to 15 Percent expected but market risk.
For retirement specifically: SIP for growth plus NPS for extra tax benefit under Section 80CCD. NPS gives an additional 50000 rupees tax deduction beyond the 1.5 lakh rupee Section 80C limit.
For child education for girl child: Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana or SSY gives 8.2 Percent returns, which is better than PPF. Only for girl child with 21-year lock-in. For child education planning generally, Alice Blue has a blog, Mutual Funds for Child Education Planning.
Mutual Fund SIP vs PPF vs FD: Which Gives Better Returns in India? For long-term wealth creation, SIP in equity mutual funds wins. Over 15 years, SIP gives 1.6 times more returns than PPF and 2 times more than FD. A 5000 rupee monthly SIP grows to 25.22 lakh rupees in 15 years, while PPF gives 16.27 lakh rupees and FD gives 12.51 lakh rupees.
But better returns depend on your situation. SIP has market risk. PPF is zero risk with guaranteed returns. FD protects capital for short-term needs.
The better choice is using all three for different goals:
This gives growth, safety, and access to money when needed.
Start early. Stay consistent. Match your investment to your time horizon. This is how you build money in India.

For goals 10 years or more away, SIP gives better returns. SIP averages 10 to 15 Percent while PPF gives 7.1 Percent. Over 15 years, SIP creates 1.6 times more money. Choose PPF if you cannot take any risk.
PPF interest rate is 7.1 Percent per annum for the April-June 2026 quarter. The government reviews rates quarterly. Interest compounds annually and is fully tax-free.
No. SIP in equity mutual funds is market-linked. Returns depend on stock market performance. Historically, equity SIPs give 10 to 15 Percent over 10 years or more. Short-term returns can be negative. FD and PPF offer fixed guaranteed returns.
PPF is fully tax-free with EEE status. Investment, interest, and maturity are all tax-free. FD interest is fully taxable as per your income slab. SIP has LTCG tax of 12.5 Percent only on gains above 1.25 lakh rupees per year.
No. Maximum PPF investment is 1.5 lakh rupees per financial year. You can deposit this as a lump sum or in installments. SIP has no upper limit. Invest as much as you want. FD also has no limit.
PPF has a 15-year lock-in with partial withdrawal after 7 years. SIP has no lock-in except for ELSS funds for 3 years. FD lock-in depends on the tenure you choose, from 7 days to 10 years, but premature withdrawal is possible with a penalty.
For a 25-year-old with 10 or more years until retirement, a SIP in equity mutual funds is best for wealth creation. Start PPF early to maximize the 15-year compounding effect. Keep FD for an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months’ expenses. A good mix is 60 Percent SIP, 30 Percent PPF, and 10 Percent FD.
