To select stocks for intraday trading, look for high liquidity, meaning volume above 10 lakh shares a day, enough volatility measured by ATR of at least 1.5 percent of price, a tight gap between the buy and sell price, and presence in the F&O segment while staying off the F&O ban list. SEBI data shows nearly 88 percent of individual derivatives traders lost money in FY26, so stock selection alone will not save you without a fixed risk per trade rule, the right trading hours, and a clear grasp of intraday costs and taxes.
Intraday trading means buying and selling the same stock on the same day. The position closes before the market shuts at 3:30 PM, no shares land in your demat account, and if you forget to close it yourself, your broker squares it off automatically, usually with an extra charge attached.
An investor buying for the long term can pick a good business and hold it through rough patches. An intraday trader does not get that luxury. There are only a few hours to work with, so the stock needs to behave in a specific way during those hours. It needs to move enough, trade easily, and not get stuck in a wide price gap. A strong company on paper can still be a poor intraday pick if it is not trading that way today.
Stock selection for intraday trading is a filtering exercise. You start with the full market and narrow it down using fixed checks instead of picking a stock because it looks like it is moving.
Manually checking every filter on every stock is not practical each morning. A few free tools speed this up.
None of these replace judgment, but they cut the time spent scanning the market from an hour to a few minutes.
Priya, a trader in Chennai, has 1,00,000 rupees in her trading account. She shortlists two stocks after her morning screen.
Reliance Industries:
A thinly traded small cap stock:
The small cap looks more volatile on paper, but a 1.2 percent price gap means Priya loses money on entry and exit before the price even moves her way. Reliance, despite a lower ATR percentage, is cheaper to trade because of its depth and tight price gap.
She waits until 9:30 AM, checks that Reliance is trading above its VWAP with the broader energy sector also in the green, then enters.
That is roughly a one to two risk to reward setup, before subtracting brokerage, STT, and other charges, which is exactly where the next section matters.
Costs eat into intraday profit faster than most beginners expect, especially on trades with small percentage moves.
On Priya’s Reliance trade above, these charges together would run into a few hundred rupees on entry and exit combined, meaningful enough that it should be checked before assuming the full 9,690 or 4,760 rupees is the final number.
On tax, intraday trading profit is treated as speculative business income under Section 43(5) of the Income Tax Act, not capital gains. It gets added to total income and taxed at your regular income tax slab rate. There is no flat or concessional rate. It also requires the ITR 3 form, not the simpler ITR 1 or ITR 2 forms used for salary or capital gains. If the trade results in a loss, that loss can only be set off against other speculative income, not salary or capital gains, and it can be carried forward for up to four assessment years.
This is general information, not tax or investment advice. Speak with a qualified tax professional for your specific situation.
Intraday Trading:
Delivery Trading:
These rules suit active traders who can watch the market through the session, roughly 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, and who are comfortable with margin and tighter risk control. Someone opening a separate demat and trading account specifically for short-term trades, apart from a long-term portfolio, usually finds this approach easier to manage without mixing the two goals.
These rules are less suited to someone who cannot track the market during the day, has low tolerance for quick losses, or wants to build wealth gradually. Delivery-based investing or a systematic investment plan tends to fit that goal better.
Picking the right stock for intraday trading comes down to a handful of checks. Liquidity, traded value, ATR-based volatility, a tight price gap, a genuine catalyst, and staying off the F&O ban list all matter, combined with trading during the hours when moves are actually cleaner. SEBI’s own data shows most retail traders in derivatives lose money, which is a reminder that stock selection is only one part of the picture. Costs, taxes, timing, and a fixed risk per trade rule matter just as much. Get the filtering process right, track your actual costs and outcomes in a journal, and treat each trade as one data point in a repeatable process rather than a one-time bet.
It can be attempted by beginners, but SEBI data shows most retail derivatives traders end up in losses, so it needs strict risk management and constant attention during market hours, not just a good stock pick.
Most traders build their shortlist before the market opens using the NSE pre-open data and heatmap, then trade actively during the first hour, roughly 9:15 to 10:30 AM, and the last hour, roughly 2:30 to 3:20 PM.
There is no fixed minimum. What matters more is keeping risk per trade around 1 to 2 percent of total capital after accounting for margin, whatever that capital amount is.
Yes. Intraday profit is speculative business income taxed at your regular income tax slab rate and filed using the ITR 3 form, while delivery trading profit falls under capital gains with its own separate rates.
It is a list of F&O stocks that NSE restricts fresh derivative positions on once open interest crosses a set limit. The underlying stock can still be traded intraday, but liquidity and price gaps often get less predictable during the ban.
