Have you been rejected for a regular credit card because you have no credit history or a low CIBIL Score? An FD-backed secured credit card can help you start building a record of borrowing and repayment.
You deposit money in a fixed deposit and receive a credit card against it. Use the card for expenses you can afford, pay the full bill on time, and give the credit bureau enough time to record your payment history.
This guide explains how to use a secured credit card to build a CIBIL Score in India, how credit utilisation works, what to check before applying, and which mistakes can hurt your credit profile.
A secured credit card is issued against a fixed deposit (FD). To build your CIBIL Score, use the card for small, planned expenses, keep the balance low, and pay the full bill before the due date every month. This can help only if the card issuer reports your account to TransUnion CIBIL. It does not guarantee a fixed score increase or a specific improvement timeline.
A secured credit card is a credit card issued against a fixed deposit. The bank keeps the FD as security and gives you a credit limit based on its policy.
For example, you may open a ₹25,000 FD and receive a card with a ₹20,000 limit. The limit may be equal to, lower than, or sometimes slightly higher than the FD amount, depending on the issuer.
The FD is not the same as your card balance. You still have to pay your credit card bill every month. If you do not pay, the issuer may take action under the card and FD agreement.
A secured card is different from a debit card:
A new-to-credit borrower is someone who does not yet have enough loan or credit card information in their credit report to create a strong credit profile. A secured card can give such a person a way to begin using formal credit.
CIBIL considers factors such as payment history, credit utilisation, length of credit history, credit mix, and new credit enquiries when calculating a score.
The process is simple:
The card does not improve your CIBIL Score merely because you have an FD. Your usage and repayment behaviour matter.
Before applying, confirm that the issuer reports the account to TransUnion CIBIL. Also, ask how often it reports information. A card that does not report your activity may not help you build a CIBIL history.
Select an FD that you can keep aside without affecting rent, household expenses, insurance premiums, or emergency savings.
Do not lock your entire savings in an FD just to receive a higher credit limit. A smaller card that you can manage is better than a large limit that encourages unnecessary spending.
Before applying, review:
A card with a low FD requirement may still be expensive if it has high annual or transaction charges.
Start with one or two predictable expenses, such as:
The goal is not to spend more. The goal is to show that you can use credit and repay it on time.
Credit utilisation is the portion of your credit limit that you are using.
Credit Utilisation Ratio = (Outstanding balance / Total credit limit) x 100
If your card limit is ₹20,000 and your balance is ₹4,000:
(₹4,000 / ₹20,000) x 100 = 20%
Below 30% is a commonly followed guideline, but it is not a guaranteed CIBIL rule. The more important habit is to avoid regularly using most of your limit and to spend only what you can repay.
CIBIL also advises consumers to keep their credit utilisation within the available limit.
Three terms often confuse new card users:
Suppose your statement is generated on 10 August and the due date is 30 August. Your bill shows the transactions included up to the statement date. You should pay the total amount due by 30 August.
If your balance is high near the statement date, a large amount may appear on the report even if you later pay it in full. Paying part of the balance before the statement date can help keep the reported balance lower, but never miss the final due date.
Pay the total amount due, not just the minimum amount due.
The minimum payment may keep the account from being treated as immediately overdue, but the remaining balance can attract interest and other charges. Carrying a balance also makes it easier to lose control of your spending.
For example, if your bill is ₹3,500, aim to pay the entire ₹3,500 by the due date.
Set up an auto-debit for the full statement amount if your bank provides that facility. Keep enough money in the linked account and check the payment confirmation.
Do not apply for several credit cards or personal loans at the same time. Each application may result in a lender enquiry on your credit report.
Apply for another card only when you have a genuine need and can manage another account. IDFC FIRST Bank also recommends limiting new applications while building credit with a secured card.
After using the card for a few billing cycles, check your CIBIL report. Look for:
The RBI states that individuals with available credit history can receive one free full credit report, including the score, once in a calendar year.
If you find an error, contact the lender and raise a dispute with the credit bureau.
Suppose Meera opens a secured credit card against a ₹25,000 FD. The issuer gives her a credit limit of ₹20,000.
She uses the card for groceries and mobile bills.
Particular | Amount |
Fixed deposit | ₹25,000 |
Credit limit | ₹20,000 |
Monthly spending | ₹3,000 |
Credit utilisation | 15% |
Amount repaid | ₹3,000 in full |
Meera pays the full bill before the due date every month. If the issuer reports her account to CIBIL, these payments can help create a repayment record.
Now imagine that she spends ₹18,000 in one month.
(₹18,000 / ₹20,000) x 100 = 90%
She may still pay the bill on time, but regularly using 90% of the limit can make repayment difficult and may show heavy dependence on available credit.
The 15% example does not guarantee a score increase, and the 90% example does not automatically cause a fixed score reduction. CIBIL Scores are based on several parts of your credit report, not one number alone.
Instead of choosing a card only because it has the lowest FD requirement, compare these points:
Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
FD requirement | Minimum amount and tenure | Decides how much money stays locked |
Credit limit | Percentage of FD offered as a limit | Affects your spending capacity |
CIBIL reporting | Whether the issuer reports to CIBIL | Determines whether the account can build a credit history |
Fees | Joining, annual, late, and cash withdrawal fees | Affects the total cost |
Interest rate | Charges on unpaid balances | Matters if you do not pay in full |
FD release | Process after card closure | Helps you access your deposit later |
Upgrade option | Whether an unsecured card may be offered | Could reduce the need for a secured card later |
Customer service | Statement and dispute support | Useful if a payment or report has an error |
Product terms change frequently. Check the official issuer website before applying. Do not rely only on comparison articles that show old fees or outdated FD limits.
Some current competitor pages compare cards such as IDFC FIRST WOW!, AU NoMo, and other FD-backed products. That comparison format is useful, but product details should be verified directly with the issuer before publication.
Benefits:
A secured credit card can suit you if:
The card can also help you learn how credit limits, statement dates, and due dates work.
Limitations and risks:
A secured card is not a guaranteed method of improving your score.
Never use a credit card or cash advance to invest in shares, futures, or options. Market prices can fall, but the card bill remains payable on a fixed date.
Parameter | Secured credit card | Regular credit card |
Security | Usually backed by an FD | Usually issued without collateral |
Approval | It may be easier for new-to-credit applicants | Depends on income, credit history, and issuer policy |
Credit limit | Linked to the FD or issuer’s policy | Decided after credit assessment |
Deposit | Required | Usually not required |
Main purpose | Build or rebuild credit history | Spending, rewards, and access to credit |
Risk | FD may be affected under the card agreement if dues remain unpaid | Unpaid dues still create debt and credit damage |
Upgrade | Some issuers may offer an unsecured card later | Already unsecured |
Best suited for | People with limited or damaged credit history | People with an established credit profile |

A secured credit card may be suitable for:
It may not be suitable if you cannot keep money locked in an FD or already struggle to pay regular household expenses. In that situation, another credit account may increase your financial burden.
A secured credit card can help you begin building a CIBIL Score when a regular credit card is not available. Open it against an affordable FD, use it for small planned expenses, keep utilisation low, and pay the full bill before the due date. Check that the issuer reports your account to CIBIL and review your credit report for errors. Do not expect an instant result or use the card to fund stock market investments. Good credit comes from steady repayment over time, not from high spending.
It can help if the issuer reports the account to TransUnion CIBIL and you pay your bills on time. The card does not guarantee a score increase.
There is no fixed period. The account must first be reported, and the bureau needs enough repayment information to update your credit profile.
Some competitors mention six to twelve months as a practical period for building a visible payment record, but this should not be treated as a promise.
Many people try to keep utilisation below 30%, but this is a general guideline and not a guaranteed CIBIL formula. Avoid regularly using most of your credit limit and pay the full bill on time.
Some issuers offer FD-backed cards to applicants with limited or no credit history. Eligibility, FD amount, income requirements, and fees differ between issuers.
Pay the full statement balance before the due date whenever possible. Paying only the minimum can leave an outstanding balance that attracts interest.
