Every Thursday evening in India, crores of rupees in option premiums expire worthless. Most of that money flows to one group, option sellers. While the majority of retail traders are busy buying calls and puts, hoping for big moves, a quieter group collects premium week after week by selling options they expect to expire worthless.
If you hold large-cap stocks in your Demat account or have capital sitting idle, you can earn regular monthly income from options without taking a directional bet on where Nifty will close on Thursday. This article explains the strategies, the mechanics, the real numbers, and the risks, from scratch.
A passive options income strategy means selling (writing) options and collecting the premium upfront. You are not trying to predict whether the market will rise or fall sharply. You are positioning yourself to profit if the market stays within a certain range until expiry.
When you sell an option, the buyer pays you a premium immediately. If the market stays within your expected range and the option expires worthless, you keep the entire premium. Repeat this every week or month.
This works because of theta decay, the natural erosion of an option’s value as it approaches expiry. An option with 25 days remaining is worth more than the same option with 5 days remaining, all else equal. Every passing day reduces the option’s value. As the seller, that daily decay works in your favour. If you are new to how options work as a contract, read Alice Blue’s guide on What is Options Trading before proceeding.
In March 2026 alone, buyers of options listed on NSE paid premiums worth 12.5 trillion rupees, equivalent to USD 150 billion. The sellers on the other side of those trades collected that premium upfront.
What you need: Stocks already held in your Demat account (minimum one lot of a Nifty 50 stock).
You sell a call option on a stock you already own. The buyer pays you a premium for the right to buy your shares at a fixed price (the strike price) on or before expiry. If the stock stays below that strike, the option expires worthless, and you keep the premium. You still hold your shares.
To understand how theta works in your favour when selling covered calls, read Alice Blue’s article on Theta in Options Trading.
Example with verified Indian numbers:
You hold 500 shares of Reliance Industries at Rs. 2,800. Reliance is trading sideways. You sell one lot of the Rs. 2,870 call option expiring in 25 days for a premium of Rs. 30 per share.
Getting paid to set a target sell price you are already comfortable with is the simplest way to describe this strategy. Alice Blue’s dedicated article on Covered Call Strategy covers strike selection and exit planning in further detail.
What you need: Cash equal to the lot value of the stock at your chosen strike price.
You sell a put option at the price you are willing to buy a stock. You collect premium while you wait. If the stock falls to your strike, you buy it at a discount. If it does not fall that far, you keep the premium and repeat next month.
Example:
HDFC Bank is trading at Rs. 1,600. You are comfortable buying it at Rs. 1,560. You sell one lot of the Rs. 1,560 put option (lot size: 550 shares) expiring in 25 days for Rs. 22 per share.
You either earn income or buy a stock you wanted at a price lower than your original target. Both outcomes are planned before you enter.
The Wheel combines covered calls and cash-secured puts into one repeatable income cycle. It suits investors who want to run a structured, low-frequency approach using the same stocks over many months.
How the cycle works:
The Wheel works best on liquid Nifty 50 stocks with active F&O participation, Reliance, HDFC Bank, TCS, Infosys, ITC, and Axis Bank. Avoid running this on mid-cap or small-cap stocks where F&O liquidity is thin.
Before moving to an iron condor, beginners should start with a bull put spread. It involves two legs:
Example using the current Nifty lot size of 65 units:
Nifty is at 24,500. You expect it to stay above 24,200 for the next two weeks.
Your maximum loss is fixed before you enter. There are no surprise losses beyond this.
Once you are comfortable running spreads for a few months, the iron condor combines a bull put spread and a bear call spread into one trade.
Example using the current Nifty lot size of 65 units:
Nifty is at 24,500. You set up:
For a Nifty iron condor, budget between Rs. 1.5 lakh and Rs. 2.5 lakh for margin depending on strike distances and prevailing India VIX levels.
NSE revised lot sizes effective from January 2026 contracts.
Index | Previous Lot Size | Current Lot Size (Jan 2026) |
Nifty 50 | 75 | 65 |
Bank Nifty | 35 | 30 |
Nifty Financial Services | 65 | 60 |
Nifty Midcap Select | 140 | 120 |
NSE revises lot sizes periodically based on contract notional value guidelines set by SEBI. Always verify the current lot size on the NSE website before placing any trade.
SEBI introduced peak margin requirements from December 1, 2020, implemented in four phases, reaching 100% from September 1, 2021. Since August 2022, the margin requirement at the start of the trading day has been considered for the entire session. Your broker blocks your full margin upfront before the trade is placed. Keep a minimum 15% buffer above the required margin in your account to avoid shortfall penalties.
The Union Budget 2026-27 increased STT on F&O trades, effective April 1, 2026.
Transaction Type | STT Rate (from April 1, 2026) |
Options sold (shorted) | 0.15% of premium |
Options exercised (in the money at expiry) | 0.15% of intrinsic value |
Futures sold | 0.05% of traded price |
If your short option expires in the money, STT is charged at 0.15% on the full intrinsic value, not just the premium you collected. On a deep in-the-money short option, this can erase most or all of your profit. Always square off short positions before expiry if they are near or in the money.
India VIX measures the market’s expected volatility over the next 30 days. Alice Blue’s article on Implied Volatility and India VIX explains how to track and interpret it before placing any options trade.
Based on historical NSE data, here is how to use India VIX for option-selling decisions:
India VIX Level | What It Means | Option Seller’s Action |
Below 12 | Low volatility, thin premiums | Strikes too close earn very little; widen them or wait |
12 to 18 | Normal range, fair premiums | Good environment for covered calls, CSPs, spreads |
Above 20 | Elevated risk, rich premiums | Tempting but dangerous, keep strikes very far from the spot |
Above 25 | High fear, very wide moves | Avoid selling or using very wide iron condors with a small size |
India VIX closed at a 17-year low below 10 in late 2025, after which Nifty corrected 1,000 to 1,500 points. An extremely low VIX is not safe for sellers; premiums are thin at strikes already uncomfortably close to current prices.
Before picking your strike, check two numbers on the NSE options chain. Alice Blue’s article on How to Read the NSE Option Chain walks through both in the context of live NSE data.
These are filters to avoid placing trades in an unfavourable market structure, not guarantees.
All F&O profit, including option premiums collected, is taxed as business income under the Income Tax Act. It is taxed at your applicable income slab rate, not at capital gains rates. You can deduct brokerage, STT, exchange charges, and internet costs as business expenses. If your F&O turnover is significant, a tax audit may apply. Work with a CA who specifically handles F&O taxation before your first full financial year of option selling.

Building a passive options income strategy in India comes down to one structural edge, time decay, and building a repeatable process around it. Start with covered calls on stocks you already own, or cash-secured puts on stocks you want to buy at lower prices. Learn the Wheel once those two feel natural. Move to index spreads when you are comfortable with defined-risk positions on Nifty.
Start with one covered call on a stock you already hold. Run it for three months. Track the premium income against your costs. If the results make sense, add a second leg.
The traders who earn consistent monthly income from options in India are not the ones chasing the biggest premiums. They are the ones who size their positions correctly, exit when wrong, and stay consistent through calm months and volatile ones.
To start trading options with low brokerage and direct access to the full NSE options chain, open a free Demat and trading account with Alice Blue and activate the F&O segment. The account opening process is fully online and takes less than 10 minutes.
Effective from the January 2026 expiry cycle, NSE reduced the Nifty 50 lot size from 75 to 65 units and Bank Nifty from 35 to 30 units. NSE reviews lot sizes periodically; always confirm on the NSE website before trading.
For a bull put spread on Nifty, Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh is generally sufficient. For an iron condor, budget Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh. For cash-secured puts on large-cap stocks, you need cash equal to the lot value at your chosen strike. For covered calls, you need to already hold one full lot of the stock.
From April 1, 2026, STT on shorted options is 0.15% of the premium. If a short option expires in the money, STT is 0.15% of the intrinsic value, applied to the full contract value, not just the premium. Always close short positions before expiry if they are near or in the money.
All F&O income, including option premiums, is treated as business income under the Income Tax Act and taxed at your applicable slab rate, not at capital gains rates. Brokerage, STT, and exchange charges are deductible as business expenses.
The Wheel is a cycle: sell a cash-secured put to earn income or get assigned stock at a discount, then sell covered calls on that stock to earn more premium. When the stock is called away, restart the cycle. It is designed for Nifty 50 large-cap stocks with active F&O participation.
India VIX between 12 and 18 is generally a stable environment for option selling. Below 12, premiums are thin. Above 20, single-day moves can be large enough to breach strikes. Track India VIX on the NSE website and Alice Blue’s guide on Implied Volatility before selecting strikes.
