When a listed company announces quarterly earnings, a dividend, or a board decision, SEBI mandates that the disclosure goes to the exchange first, before it reaches any news outlet, aggregator, or research platform. That means nseindia.com gets the information at source, in its original form, with no intermediary summarising or editorialising it.
Third-party platforms are downstream. They receive the same data, interpret it, add their own framing, and sometimes introduce delays on free tiers. When you research directly on NSE, you’re working from the primary source, which matters more than most retail investors appreciate.
Go to nseindia.com and type the stock symbol into the search bar at the top. The Live Quote page that loads shows you Open, High, Low, Close, and 52-week High and Low levels at a glance.
The more useful data sits one click deeper. Open the Trade Info section and find the Security-wise Delivery Position. This tells you what percentage of the day’s traded volume resulted in actual delivery, meaning shares moved from one owner to another, rather than being squared off intraday. A delivery percentage above 50% generally indicates genuine accumulation rather than speculative intraday activity. That distinction matters enormously when you’re trying to assess whether institutional money is actually building a position.
Navigate to the Company Information tab on the stock’s quote page. From here, you can access three things that form the backbone of fundamental analysis.
Financial Results shows you quarterly revenue, net profit trends, and operating margins directly from audited submissions. Shareholding Pattern tells you whether promoter holding is stable, declining, or, crucially, whether promoters have pledged a significant portion of their shares as collateral. Corporate Announcements gives you raw PDF filings: board meeting outcomes, order wins, regulatory disclosures, everything the company has formally communicated to the exchange.
Read the PDFs. Don’t just rely on the headline summary. Auditor notes, footnotes on debt, and qualifications buried in quarterly reports carry information that never makes it into third-party summaries.
For a broader view of a company’s financial health, you can also learn how fundamental analysis helps evaluate a stock beyond its current market price.
Hover over Market Data in the main navigation bar and select FII/FPI & DII Trading Activity. This page publishes daily provisional totals of what foreign and domestic institutional investors bought and sold in the cash market.
The numbers go up every evening between 5:30 and 6:30 PM IST once post-market reconciliation is complete. Check them regularly, and you’ll develop a feel for whether institutional money is flowing into or out of equities on a sustained basis, which is a far more reliable signal than any intraday price movement.
Also check the Bulk and Block Deals section. Bulk deals occur during regular trading hours when any single entity trades more than 0.5% of a company’s total equity. Block deals are different: minimum ₹10 crore transactions executed in dedicated 15-minute windows at a pre-agreed price between two specific parties. Both tabs tell you who the large players are and which direction they’re moving in.
If you want to understand these flows in more detail, tracking institutional buying can help you see how FII and DII activity may affect market sentiment.
Go to Market Data, then Option Chain. Select your stock or index symbol and the expiry you want to analyse.
The option chain shows live Call and Put data across every available strike price, Open Interest, volume, implied volatility, and premium. What you’re looking for specifically: the strike with the highest Call Open Interest marks a likely resistance zone, where sellers are concentrated and where price tends to face pressure. The strike with the highest Put Open Interest marks likely support, where buyers are defending positions.
One important misconception to avoid: high Call Open Interest is not a bullish signal. It means sellers have concentrated there, which typically acts as a ceiling at least in the near term. Reading it the wrong way leads to trades built on the exact opposite of what the data is actually saying.
Understanding how Open Interest works can make it easier to interpret changes in option positions across different strike prices.
You can also learn more about how support and resistance levels are identified when analysing a stock’s price movement.
Go to the Historical Data tab on any stock page, set your date range up to 365 days or more and download the CSV. The file gives you OHLC prices and volume for every trading session in that window.
This is genuinely useful for anyone building their own spreadsheet models, backtesting a strategy, or simply wanting to analyse price behaviour around specific events without relying on a charting platform’s built-in tools.
Historical price and volume data can also be useful when studying price patterns as part of a swing trading strategy.
Say you’re considering a swing trade in TATAMOTORS and want to verify whether there’s real institutional interest backing the setup.
You search TATAMOTORS on the NSE homepage. Under Trade Info, the delivery percentage reads 62%, strong enough to suggest buying isn’t purely speculative.
You move to Corporate Announcements and find a recently filed PDF disclosing a major new commercial electric vehicle order. Under Financial Results, the latest audited quarter shows net profit growth of 18% year-over-year.
Three data points, all from primary sources, all free, all pointing in the same direction. That’s a meaningfully different foundation for a trade than a stock tip from a social media channel.
Feature | NSE Website | Third-Party Screeners |
Data Source | Direct primary exchange | Secondary aggregator |
Cost | Completely free | Subscription or freemium |
Data Lag | Near real-time | 5–15 minute delay on free tiers |
Corporate Disclosures | Full original PDFs | Summarized highlights |
Derivatives Data | Complete option chain and OI | Basic or paywalled |
The gap that matters most is the disclosure access. When you’re reading a third-party summary of a quarterly result, you’re reading someone else’s interpretation of the filing. When you open the PDF on NSE directly, you’re reading the actual document, including the parts that don’t make it into summaries.
The NSE website won’t win any awards for user experience. But the data it gives you, unfiltered, undelayed, directly from the regulatory source, is the same data that institutional analysts work from. Learning to navigate it properly is worth the initial learning curve, both in terms of cost saved and in terms of the quality of information you’re making decisions from.
Build the habit of checking delivery percentages, reading original PDF filings, monitoring FII/DII flows, and reviewing the option chain before entering positions. Do it consistently, and it compounds, not just as a research tool, but as a way of thinking about markets that keeps you grounded in actual data rather than market noise.
Yes entirely. Real-time quotes, corporate filings, option chain data, FII/DII activity, and historical CSV downloads are all available without any subscription or registration fee.
Search the stock symbol on the NSE homepage, click the Trade Info tab below the price snapshot, and look for the Security-wise Delivery Position section. It shows total delivery quantity and the delivery percentage for the session.
Hover over Market Data in the top navigation and select FII/FPI & DII Trading Activity. Provisional figures are published every evening between 5:30 and 6:30 PM IST after post-market reconciliation.
Yes. Go to any stock’s individual page, select the Historical Data tab, set your preferred date range, and click Download CSV. The file exports OHLC prices and volume data for every session in the selected window.
Not directly; the NSE portal doesn’t have a multi-criteria screener. It does offer pre-filtered lists under Market Data, including Volume Gainers, 52-Week Highs and Lows, and Large Deals. For custom ratio-based screening, export raw data via CSV and filter in Excel, or use Screener alongside the NSE portal.
No. High delivery on an up day confirms accumulation by institutional buyers holding positions overnight. High delivery on a sharply falling day signals distribution, large holders selling into the market. Always read delivery percentage alongside price direction and broader market context.
Bulk deals happen during regular trading hours when a single entity trades more than 0.5% of a company’s total equity. Block deals are minimum ₹10 crore transactions executed during two dedicated 15-minute windows: 8:45 to 9:00 AM and 2:05 to 2:20 PM, at a pre-agreed price between two specific parties. Both appear in separate tabs on the NSE portal.
NSE blocks automated scraping bots with strict security protocols, and sometimes legitimate users get caught in the same net. The most common causes are an active VPN, rapid page-switching behaviour, or browser scripts attempting to pull data programmatically. Fix: disconnect your VPN, clear browser cache and cookies, and try again in an Incognito window.
Quotes and option chain data refresh every few seconds,s close enough to real-time for research, fundamental analysis, and swing trading decisions. For tick-by-tick order book depth required by intraday scalpers, a direct broker terminal or paid Level-2 data feed is the appropriate tool.
Hover over Corporates in the top navigation and click Board Meetings. Listed companies are legally required to notify the exchange in advance when a board meeting is scheduled to approve quarterly financials, declare dividends, or announce corporate actions. This is the most reliable source for earnings calendar data, more reliable than third-party financial calendars, which sometimes lag the official submission.
