Every month, your SIP amount is automatically debited from your account. Your loan EMI is paid without you having to log in. Your insurance premium goes through on a fixed date without a reminder. None of this happens by itself.

It happens because a NACH mandate is active on your bank account.

Most people who have taken a loan, started a SIP, or paid premiums have at least one NACH mandate running. Very few know how to check it, what limits apply to it, or how to cancel it at their specific bank.

This guide covers all of that with verified numbers and bank-level steps for SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and Axis Bank.

What Is a NACH Mandate?

NACH stands for National Automated Clearing House. It is a centralised payment system built and operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

A NACH mandate is your written or digital authorisation allowing a lender, mutual fund house, insurer, or utility company to automatically debit or credit a fixed amount from your bank account on a recurring schedule.

Once the mandate is registered, you do not need to approve each payment. The bank processes it automatically on the scheduled date.

Each mandate gets a UMRN (Unique Mandate Reference Number) at the time of registration. This is your tracking code. You will need it to check the status, modify, or cancel the mandate.

Types of NACH Mandates

1. NACH Debit

Money is debited from your account by a third party. Used for loan EMIs, mutual fund SIPs, insurance premiums, school fees, and utility bills.

2. NACH Credit

Money is credited into your account by a third party. Used for salary disbursals, pension payments, dividend transfers, and government scheme payouts like PM KISAN.

3. e NACH (Electronic NACH)

The digital version of the mandate. No physical form required. Registration happens through net banking or Aadhaar eSign with OTP. This is the standard method used by fintech platforms, mutual fund apps, and digital lenders today.

How a NACH Mandate Works

  1. You agree to a recurring payment, such as a loan EMI or a monthly SIP.
  2. The company collecting the payment, called the User Institution, collects your account number, IFSC code, the debit amount, frequency, and the validity dates.
  3. This mandate request goes to NPCI through the company’s Sponsor Bank.
  4. NPCI registers the mandate and issues a UMRN.
  5. Your bank receives and activates the instruction.
  6. On every scheduled date, the bank debits the specified amount and transfers it to the company.

After registration, the debit runs on its own. It continues until the end date you approved or until you cancel it.

A Real Example

Kavitha takes a personal loan of ₹240,000. Her EMI is ₹5,500 per month for 48 months. When the lender disburses the loan, they ask her to register a NACH mandate.

She fills in her account number and IFSC code and authorises a monthly debit of ₹5,500 on the 5th of every month for four years. After NPCI registers the mandate, she receives a UMRN on her phone.

From the next month, ₹5,500 is debited on the 5th automatically.

Eighteen months later, Kavitha decides to foreclose the loan early. She contacts the lender to close the account. But unless the mandate is also cancelled, the instruction stays active in the NPCI system. She must cancel it separately through her bank or the lender’s platform.

NACH Mandate Debit Limits

NPCI has fixed maximum debit caps per transaction based on the type of mandate.

Mandate Type

Maximum Debit Limit Per Transaction

Physical NACH mandate

₹1 crore

Security mandate (loans, credit)

₹50 lakh

e Mandate for recurring payments

₹10 lakh

Debit card linked mandate

₹1 lakh

If a company tries to register a mandate above these thresholds, NPCI rejects the registration.

How Long Does Activation Take?

  • e NACH mandate: Activated within 24 to 48 hours after successful OTP authentication
  • Physical NACH form: Takes 7 to 14 business days from the date of form submission

If you are starting a SIP, register the mandate at least 10 days before the first instalment date. Late mandate activation is a leading reason why first SIP payments get skipped.

How to Register a NACH Mandate

Online Registration (eNACH)

  1. Log in to your net banking portal or the platform where the payment is being set up.
  2. Go to the payments or mandate section.
  3. Enter your account number, IFSC code, maximum debit amount, frequency, and validity dates.
  4. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  5. Authenticate through net banking credentials or Aadhaar eSign.
  6. You will receive your UMRN via SMS once the mandate is registered.

Offline Registration (Physical Form)

  1. Get the NACH mandate form from your bank branch or the company.
  2. Fill in your full name, account number, MICR code, IFSC code, debit amount, frequency, start date, and end date.
  3. Sign the form exactly as per your bank records. A signature mismatch is the most common reason for rejection.
  4. Submit the signed form to the company or lender.
  5. They forward it to their sponsor bank, which sends it to NPCI.
  6. You will receive a UMRN once activated.

How to Check Your NACH Mandate Status

After registering, verify whether your mandate is active, pending, or rejected directly through your bank.

  • SBI: Log in to Online SBI → go to eServices → select NACH Mandate → view status using your UMRN
  • HDFC Bank: Log in to HDFC NetBanking → go to Requests → select Mandate Status Enquiry
  • ICICI Bank: Log in to ICICI Net Banking → go to Payments and Transfer → select Manage Mandates
  • Axis Bank: Log in to Axis NetBanking → go to Service Requests → select NACH or e-Mandate Status

If your mandate shows as Rejected, the most common causes are a wrong IFSC code, an account number mismatch, or a signature error on physical forms. Contact the company to resubmit with corrected details.

RBI and NPCI Rules You Should Know

NPCI issued updated guidelines directing all banks to provide a CASR facility (Cancel, Amend, Suspend, and Revoke) for NACH mandates. Banks that do not offer this digitally risk losing access to the NPCI payment platform.

What this means for you:

  • You have the right to cancel any NACH mandate online without visiting a branch
  • Banks cannot refuse a valid cancellation request if you hold the UMRN
  • Companies cannot continue debiting your account after a confirmed cancellation
  • Your bank must notify you via SMS or email before any new mandate is activated on your account

For UPI AutoPay transactions, NPCI increased the authentication-free limit to ₹1,00,000 per transaction for categories like mutual fund subscriptions, insurance premiums, and credit card bill payments, following RBI circular RBI/2023-2024/88 dated December 12, 2023. Above this amount, an additional factor of authentication is mandatory.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Not maintaining balance before the debit date
Set a reminder 2 days before every EMI or SIP date to check your account balance. One missed deduction costs you the bounce fee, plus it damages your credit score.
  2. Cancelling too late
A cancellation request submitted 2 days before the debit date will almost certainly still process one final payment. Give at least 10 working days.
  3. Cancelling only with the bank
If the lender or fund house still has an active mandate on their end, they may send another debit request. Cancel from both sides.
  4. Losing the UMRN
Without the UMRN, tracking or cancelling a specific mandate is harder. Save the SMS you receive after mandate registration.
  5. Not checking old mandates
Mandates from closed loans or stopped SIPs sometimes stay active in the system. Log in to your net banking portal every 6 months and review the active mandates list.

A NACH mandate is a straightforward payment instruction that runs in the background of your financial life. It keeps your EMIs on time, your SIPs running, and your premiums paid without any manual effort.

Three things every account holder should do: know your active mandates and their UMRNs, keep enough balance before every debit date, and cancel old mandates properly once a loan closes or a SIP stops.
