Alice Blue Home

If you have an Alice Blue Demat account you no longer use, closing it is free, straightforward, and can be done entirely online. Dormant accounts carry a security risk because idle accounts are targets for unauthorised access. Beyond that, keeping an account open without activity serves no purpose.

This guide walks you through the exact steps to close your Alice Blue Demat account, what to prepare beforehand, what happens to your investments, and what mistakes get requests rejected.

What Is a Demat Account Closure?

A Demat account closure is a permanent request to deactivate your account with your Depository Participant (DP). Once closed, your DP ID and Client ID are deactivated, your holdings must be sold or transferred before closure, and your linked trading account is also shut down.

Alice Blue is a registered DP under CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited). This is relevant when you transfer your securities out before closing. If the receiving broker is also on CDSL, it is an intra-depository transfer. If the receiving broker is on NSDL, it is an inter-depository transfer.

Reasons to Close a Demat Account

  • Switching to a different broker permanently
  • Consolidating two or more accounts into one
  • No plans to trade or invest in the near future
  • Change in NRI status: resident Demat accounts must be closed when a person becomes an NRI, and a new NRI account (NRE or NRO) must be opened
  • Employer policy restricting personal Demat account ownership
  • Security concerns over a long-dormant account

If you only want to pause trading temporarily, deactivation is better than closure. A deactivated account can be reactivated later. A closed account cannot.

Before You Close: Five Steps to Complete First

Skipping any of these will result in your closure request being rejected.

1. Sell or transfer all holdings

Your Demat account must have zero securities before closure. This includes shares, bonds, ETFs, Sovereign Gold Bonds, and mutual fund units held in Demat form. Sell through your trading account or transfer via a Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS).

2. Stop SIPs and redeem mutual fund units

Stop all active SIPs linked to your Demat account. Redeem the units or transfer the folio to another account before initiating closure.

3. Resolve Dead ISINs

Dead ISINs are shares of delisted or deactivated companies that cannot be sold on the exchange. If your account holds any, contact your broker to have them removed. Dead ISINs are one of the most common reasons closure requests are delayed.

4. Clear outstanding dues

Settle any negative ledger balance, including past transaction charges or brokerage dues, before submitting.

5. Withdraw your trading ledger balance

Your Demat and trading accounts are linked. Withdraw your cash balance to your registered bank account before initiating closure, since both accounts close together.

How to Close a Demat Account Online

SEBI mandates that any broker offering online account opening must also provide an online closure facility to all account holders, whether they opened online or offline.

Step 1: Log in to your broker’s portal or mobile app using your Client ID and password.

Step 2: Go to Account Settings or Profile and look for the Account Closure option.

Step 3: Select the reason for closure and fill in the required details.

Step 4: Download the Account Closure Form from your broker’s website, fill it in accurately, and upload it through the portal.

Step 5: Authenticate using Aadhaar OTP e-sign. Your Aadhaar must be linked to your registered mobile number for this step.

Step 6: Submit the request. Once all dues are cleared and the submission is verified, CDSL mandates that DPs process the closure within 2 working days.

SEBI rules confirm that no fee can be charged for closing a Beneficial Owner Demat account. Closure is free.

How to Close a Demat Account Offline

Joint account holders and anyone without Aadhaar mobile linkage must use the physical offline route.

Step 1: Download the Account Closure Form from your broker’s website. For NSDL accounts, use Form 34.

Step 2: Fill in your DP ID, Client ID, PAN, reason for closure, and bank account details.

Step 3: All account holders must sign if it is a joint account. The signature must match exactly what is on record with your DP.

Step 4: Return your unused DIS booklet to your DP along with the form. This is mandatory.

Step 5: Attach self-attested copies of PAN and Aadhaar.

Step 6: Submit the form physically at your broker’s branch or courier it to their registered head office.

Upon receipt of a complete request with no outstanding dues, the DP is required to process the closure within 2 working days.

What Happens to Your Holdings Before Closure

You have two options for any securities still in your account:

Option

Process

Timeframe

Sell the securities

Sell via your trading account; proceeds go to your linked bank account

T+1 settlement

Transfer to another Demat account

Submit a DIS form; same depository transfers are intra-depository; transfers between NSDL and CDSL are inter-depository via CDSL EASIEST or NSDL Speed-e

3 to 5 working days

For inter-depository transfers, you need the Client Master Report (CMR) of the receiving account, signed and stamped by the receiving DP.

Example: Rahul holds 50 shares of Infosys (ISIN: INE009A01021) in a CDSL account and wants to move them to another broker also on CDSL before closing. He fills an intra-DIS form, submits it to his current broker, and the shares reflect in his new account within 3 working days.

What Changes After Closure

  • You cannot buy shares, apply for IPOs, or hold securities until a new account is opened
  • Your Alice Blue trading account is also deactivated at the same time
  • Download your P&L reports and contract notes before closing. Once the account shuts down, you lose access to historical data on the platform. You need these for income tax filing.
  • Corporate actions such as dividends, bonus shares, and stock splits will no longer route to a closed account. Sell or transfer all holdings before closure.
  • Your DP ID and Client ID are permanently deactivated. A new account means a fresh set of IDs.

Common Reasons Closure Requests Are Rejected

  • DIS booklet not returned along with the form
  • Dead ISINs are still present in the account
  • Active SIPs are still linked to the Demat account
  • Signature on the form does not match the signature on record
  • Outstanding dues not cleared before submission
  • Cash balance in the trading ledger has not been withdrawn

Who Should Close Their Account

Close the account if:

  • You have permanently shifted to a different broker
  • You have multiple accounts and want to consolidate
  • You have become an NRI and need to switch to an NRI Demat account

Do not close if:

  • You are taking a short break from trading. Deactivation is more practical.
  • You are dissatisfied with a specific feature. Contact your broker for any feedback regarding the issue.
