If you have been waiting for the US Federal Reserve to cut interest rates, yesterday was not your day. On July 29, 2026, the Fed kept its benchmark rate unchanged at 3.50 to 3.75 per cent for the fifth meeting in a row. That part was expected. What was not expected was how the committee got there: a 9-3 vote, with three regional Fed presidents pushing to raise rates instead of holding them. That is the most divided the Fed has been on rate direction since 2016.
For Indian investors, the headline “Fed holds rates” undersells what actually happened. A hawkish hold with three dissents pushing for a hike behaves very differently in markets than a routine pause. Here is what changed yesterday, why it happened, and what it means for Nifty, FII flows, the Rupee, and the Reserve Bank of India’s own rate call due in the first week of August.
The Federal Open Market Committee left the federal funds rate at 3.50 to 3.75 per cent, a level it has now held since around the start of the year. Three regional Fed presidents, Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis, and Lorie Logan of Dallas, dissented in favour of an immediate quarter-point hike, arguing that inflation has stayed above the Fed’s 2 per cent target for too long.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, in only his second meeting leading the committee, has deliberately stripped back the forward guidance that markets used to lean on. The post-meeting statement was short and gave little away about what happens next. Markets are now pricing meaningful odds of a hike later this year rather than a cut, a sharp reversal from the easing narrative that dominated headlines earlier in 2026.
Why the hawkish turn: the US-Iran conflict has kept energy markets on edge, and Brent crude has swung sharply this month, trading in the high 80s to around 90 dollars a barrel after spiking briefly above 100 on renewed attacks on shipping routes. That kind of energy volatility feeds straight into headline inflation, and it is the main reason three FOMC members wanted to act now rather than wait.
Market reaction was swift. US Treasury yields moved higher, with the 10-year touching around 4.65 per cent. Wall Street’s major indices slipped as traders repriced how long US rates will stay high.
A hawkish Fed does not hit India through one channel; it moves through several at once.
All eyes now turn to the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee, which meets August 3 to 5, 2026. The repo rate currently stands at 5.25 per cent, after the RBI brought it down in stages from a peak of 6.50 percent through 2025 and early 2026. The committee has held a neutral stance since its June meeting, where it also raised its FY27 CPI inflation forecast to 5.1 per cent while keeping GDP growth projections around 6.6 to 6.9 per cent.
A rate cut in August now looks unlikely, for three connected reasons.
The most likely outcome is a hawkish hold at 5.25 per cent in August, with the door left open for easing later in FY27 once oil prices settle and the Fed’s own path becomes clearer.

No. The Fed held its benchmark rate at 3.50 to 3.75 per cent on July 29, 2026, in a 9-3 vote. Three regional Fed presidents wanted a hike, not a cut.
Persistent inflation above the Fed’s 2 per cent target, combined with an oil price spike linked to the US-Iran conflict, pushed Cleveland’s Beth Hammack, Minneapolis’s Neel Kashkari, and Dallas’s Lorie Logan to favour an immediate hike.
Most likely not. With the Fed on a hawkish footing and the Rupee near 96 to the dollar, a cut now would narrow the rate gap between India and the US at a time when the RBI needs room to manage imported inflation risk. A hold at 5.25 per cent is the more probable outcome.
IT services, given their reliance on US corporate tech budgets, and import-heavy sectors like paints, chemicals, and aviation, given their exposure to crude oil and Rupee movement.
Continue systematic investments, favour financially strong companies over highly leveraged ones, and treat rate-driven volatility as a market condition to manage rather than a signal to exit.
