You opened a demat account with Alice Blue. Then you come across terms like DP Name, DP ID, Client ID, BO ID and Demat ID.
If these numbers and terms look confusing, you’re not alone. They are simply different identifiers used to identify your Depository Participant and your demat account.
For Alice Blue users, understanding these numbers is especially useful when you are applying for an IPO, transferring shares, checking your demat details or completing certain depository-related requests.
This guide explains what each term means, how they are connected and where you may need them.
For an Alice Blue CDSL demat account:
The relationship is:
DP ID + Client ID = BO ID / Demat ID
For example:
12085300 + 10293847 = 1208530010293847
The example above is only for explaining the format. Your actual Client ID and BO ID will be different.
When you buy shares, ETFs or other eligible securities in dematerialised form, they are held electronically in your demat account.
India has two depositories:
They maintain electronic records of securities held by investors.
You generally access your demat account through a Depository Participant (DP) rather than dealing with the depository directly.
A simple way to look at the relationship is:
You → Alice Blue → CDSL → Your Demat Account
Alice Blue is a CDSL Depository Participant, and its current CDSL DP ID is 12085300.
DP Name is the name of the entity acting as your Depository Participant.
For Alice Blue users, the DP Name is:
Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited
The DP provides access to demat-related services and acts as the link between you and the depository.
DP ID is the identification number assigned to a Depository Participant.
Alice Blue’s CDSL DP ID is:
12085300
This number identifies Alice Blue as the DP in the CDSL system.
Your DP ID is not your personal account number. It is the identifier for the Depository Participant.
Your Client ID is the individual identifier associated with your demat account within the DP’s structure.
For a CDSL account, the Client ID forms the last 8 digits of the 16-digit BO ID.
For example:
DP ID: 12085300
Client ID: 10293847
Together, they form:
BO ID: 1208530010293847
CDSL’s current operating instructions state that the first 8 digits of the BO account number form the DP ID and the remaining 8 digits form the Client ID.
BO ID stands for Beneficial Owner Identification Number.
It is the complete demat account number used to identify your account in the CDSL system.
For a CDSL account, it contains 16 digits:
8-digit DP ID + 8-digit Client ID = 16-digit BO ID
So, if your details were:
DP ID: 12085300
Client ID: 10293847
Your BO ID would be:
1208530010293847
CDSL also refers to the BO ID as the demat account number.
For a CDSL account, BO ID and Demat Account Number refer to the same 16-digit account number.
You may see different terminology depending on the form, platform or document.
So if a form asks for your:
you should check the instructions carefully, but for a CDSL account these terms commonly refer to the same 16-digit account identifier.
The format is different for the two depositories.
Feature | CDSL | NSDL |
Demat account format | 16 digits | Starts with “IN” followed by digits |
DP ID format | 8 digits | 8-character DP ID |
Client ID | 8 digits | 8 digits |
Alice Blue | CDSL DP | Not applicable to Alice Blue’s CDSL DP |
For Alice Blue’s CDSL demat accounts, the BO ID is a 16-digit numeric number.
Don’t assume that every broker uses CDSL. The depository depends on the particular DP relationship.
You don’t need to memorise your BO ID or Client ID.
Your demat details can generally be found in your account-related documents and through your broker’s account information.
If you are using Alice Blue, start by checking your account details on the platform.
You can also use Alice Blue’s ANT Web to access your account.
If you cannot locate the details, contact Alice Blue support and provide the information required for account verification. Alice Blue Support
Your demat account number may also appear in account-opening or demat-related documents provided when your account was activated.
You normally don’t need to enter these numbers every time you buy or sell shares through your trading platform.
Your broker already has the account information required to route regular transactions.
However, you may need these details for specific activities.
Some IPO application processes require demat account details for identifying where securities should be credited if shares are allotted.
The exact fields can depend on the application method, so enter the details requested by the application carefully.
If a form specifically asks for your 16-digit CDSL demat account number, use your BO ID rather than entering only your 8-digit Client ID.
If you want to transfer shares from one demat account to another, the receiving account’s details may be required.
Depending on the method, this can include the recipient’s:
The exact requirements depend on the transfer method and the DPs involved.
This is where many new investors get confused.
TPIN stands for Transaction Personal Identification Number. It is used for authorising certain electronic debit instructions from a CDSL demat account.
If you use eDIS to authorise a sale of holdings, CDSL’s system uses TPIN and OTP-based authentication.
However, TPIN is not necessarily required for every Alice Blue customer.
Alice Blue also supports DDPI, which can allow eligible delivery-related debits without requiring manual TPIN/OTP authorisation for each sale.
For non-DDPI/eDIS transactions, Alice Blue currently explains that the TPIN authorisation is valid for the trading day after successful verification.
Your BO ID identifies your demat account when securities are credited to it.
For example, shares received through a corporate action or another permitted transfer are credited to the demat account associated with the relevant BO details.
For cash benefits such as dividends, the payment is generally made to the bank account registered for the investor, subject to the applicable process.
When you pledge eligible securities held in your demat account, the depository account details are used as part of the pledge process.
The exact authentication and steps depend on the broker, DP, and depository process.
This is the easiest way to remember them:
Term | What it identifies | Alice Blue example |
DP Name | Your Depository Participant | Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited |
DP ID | The Depository Participant | 12085300 |
Client ID | Your individual demat account identifier | Your unique 8-digit number |
BO ID | Your complete CDSL demat account number | 12085300XXXXXXXX |
Demat ID | Common term for the demat account number | 12085300XXXXXXXX |
Think of it this way:
DP ID = identifies the DP
Client ID = identifies your account within the DP
BO ID = DP ID + Client ID
This distinction becomes easier when you look at the full number.
Suppose your BO ID is:
1208530010293847
It can be separated as:
12085300 | 10293847
The first part identifies the DP.
The second part identifies your individual account.
Together, they create your complete BO ID.
CDSL’s current documentation confirms this 8-digit + 8-digit structure.
DP ID, Client ID, BO ID and Demat ID may sound like four different account numbers, but they are closely connected.
For an Alice Blue CDSL account:
DP Name: Alice Blue Financial Services Private Limited
DP ID: 12085300
Client ID: Your unique 8-digit identifier
BO ID / Demat ID: Your complete 16-digit demat account number
The easiest way to remember it is:
DP ID + Client ID = BO ID
You usually won’t need to enter these details for every trade, but knowing where to find them can save time when you’re dealing with IPO applications, share transfers or depository-related requests.
Alice Blue’s current CDSL DP ID is 12085300.
For a CDSL account, the BO ID is the 16-digit demat account number. “Demat ID” is also commonly used to refer to this number.
The Client ID is the unique 8-digit identifier that forms the last 8 digits of your CDSL BO ID.
Your BO ID is your complete 16-digit CDSL demat account number. The first 8 digits are Alice Blue’s DP ID, 12085300, and the last 8 digits are your Client ID.
Not necessarily. For regular selling through Alice Blue, the platform handles the transaction process. Depending on whether you have DDPI or use eDIS, you may need to complete the applicable authorisation process.
TPIN is a Transaction Personal Identification Number used for authorising eligible electronic debit instructions through CDSL’s eDIS mechanism.
Yes. If you have multiple demat accounts, each account has its own account identifier.
A wrong BO ID can cause a transaction or application to be rejected or create processing issues. Always verify the complete number before submitting it.
