Demat vs SOA is one of the first confusions many new investors face: “Where exactly are my investments held?” Sometimes your holdings show up in your Demat account, and other times you receive a Statement of Account (SOA) from a mutual fund house.
Both confirm ownership, but they work differently and are maintained in different systems. Once you understand the difference, it becomes much easier to track your portfolio, download the right statements, and avoid mix-ups when you invest or redeem.
In this guide, we’ll explain what a Demat account and Statement of Account mean, how each holding method works, and how investors can track their holdings correctly. By the end, you’ll understand which method suits your investment approach.
A Demat account holds securities like shares, ETFs, bonds, and mutual fund units in electronic form. You open it with a Depository Participant (DP) (usually a broker or bank), and it is linked to a depository system like NSDL or CDSL.
In India, two depositories manage all dematerialised securities:
SEBI regulates both. Together, they maintain electronic records of most dematerialised securities owned by investors in India.

A Statement of Account (SOA) is a record of mutual fund units held in non-demat form. In SOA mode, your mutual fund units are maintained with the AMC (mutual fund house) and processed through an RTA (Registrar and Transfer Agent) such as CAMS or KFintech.
Your holdings are linked to a folio number, and the SOA acts as proof of:
SOA is mainly used for mutual funds, not for shares.
Step 1: Open a Demat account with a DP (broker/bank).
Step 2: Buy shares/ETFs → they are credited to your Demat account after settlement.
Step 3: If mutual funds are purchased in Demat mode, the units are credited to the Demat account, similar to other securities.
Step 4: Sell/redeem → units or shares are debited once the transaction is completed.
Step 5: Track holdings using DP/broker statements and your portfolio view.
Step 1: Invest in a mutual fund (directly with the AMC or through a platform that supports SOA).
Step 2: A folio number is created or used for that AMC.
Step 3: The AMC/RTA updates unit balances for every SIP, lump sum, switch, or redemption.
Step 4: Redeem units → the AMC processes the request and sends money to your bank account.
Step 5: Track holdings using SOA statements issued by the AMC or through consolidated account statements (CAS).
Priya invests in the same equity mutual fund scheme in two ways.
Case A: Priya invests via SOA (folio-based)
Case B: Priya invests via the Demat mode
Even though the scheme is the same, her holdings are now recorded in two different systems:
Point | Demat Account | Statement of Account (SOA) |
Where ownership is recorded | Depository system through your DP | AMC/RTA records under a folio |
What you can hold | Shares, ETFs, bonds, MF (demat mode) | Mutual funds (folio-based) |
Identifier | Demat account ID | Folio number |
Best for | Investors who also invest/trade in stocks/ETFs | Mutual fund-first investors |
How do you track holdings | Broker/DP statement and demat holdings view | SOA statement from AMC/RTA |
Common issue | Charges and processes vary by DP | Multiple folios if details differ |
The difference between a Demat Account and a Statement of Account (SOA) is basically where your investments are “kept” on record. In Demat mode, your holdings show up in your Demat account (the same place where your shares and ETFs sit). In SOA mode, your mutual fund units are recorded under a folio number with the mutual fund company, and you track them through SOA statements.
If you invest in stocks/ETFs along with mutual funds, a Demat account can keep everything under one roof. If mutual funds are your main focus, especially SIPs, SOA is usually easier to manage. The best approach is to stick to one method for mutual funds, keep your PAN and contact details consistent, and check your consolidated statement occasionally so your full portfolio stays easy to track.
If you’re planning to start investing, you can open a demat account with Alice Blue and get started.
It means your mutual fund units are held inside your Demat account, not under an AMC folio. You’ll see them in your broker/DP holdings, similar to stocks and ETFs.
For many SIP investors, SOA is simpler because SIPs are naturally folio-based and easy to track via statements. Demat is useful if you also invest in stocks/ETFs and want everything in one place.
Yes, but it can get confusing. The same fund can appear in two places (folio + demat). Tracking and planning is easier if most of your mutual funds are in one holding method.
