RBI Delays Capital Market Norms

Shares of capital market-related stocks rose sharply on Wednesday after the Reserve Bank of India deferred new capital market exposure norms. BSE, CDSL, and Angel One led the gains.

The RBI delayed the norms’ implementation to July 1, 2026. The rules focus on lending limits for shares, REITs, InvITs, and a framework for capital market intermediaries.

The new regulations prohibit banks from funding proprietary trading. They also require 100% collateral for loans to brokers and increase equity collateral haircuts to at least 40%.

Industry analysts said the deferral gives brokers time to make representations to the regulator. They can seek relaxations and address operational challenges before compliance begins.

Stock brokers warned that, once implemented, the norms could raise funding costs. This may reduce leveraged trading volumes and affect profitability for intermediaries.

Brokers may need non-traditional financing to maintain trading activities. They anticipate stress in the industry, especially for smaller firms that rely on low-cost leverage.
