Your Demat account can be frozen even when you have money and shares sitting in it. Not because of a market crash. Not because of a broker error. Because one KYC field is empty or outdated.
SEBI, along with depositories NSDL and CDSL, has made six KYC attributes mandatory for every Demat account in India. If any one is missing, your Demat account gets frozen for debits and your trading account gets blocked at the exchange. You cannot buy. You cannot sell. This article tells you exactly what those six attributes are, why each one matters, and what you need to do right now.
KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It is the process your broker or Depository Participant uses to confirm your identity before allowing you to hold or trade securities.
Think of it this way. When you open a bank account, the bank needs to know who you are. A Demat account works the same way. Your broker needs verified proof of your identity, address, and financial background before you can start investing.
What catches many investors off guard is that KYC is not a one-time formality you complete at account opening and forget. SEBI requires your information to stay accurate at all times. The moment any attribute goes outdated, your account can be flagged and restricted.
As specified in NSDL’s official investor advisory, every Demat account holder in India must have these six attributes updated and verified:
All six must be present and verified. One missing field is enough to trigger a freeze.
Your full legal name must match what is on your PAN card and Aadhaar exactly. Not approximately. Exactly.
Even a small variation, like writing “R. Kumar” on your KYC form when your PAN card says “Rajesh Kumar,” can fail the government database cross-check and prevent your account from being fully activated. Always use your name as it appears on your PAN card.
PAN is the single most important identifier for any investor in India. It connects every transaction you make, whether it is buying shares, receiving dividends, or redeeming mutual funds, to the Income Tax Department’s records.
There are no exceptions here. No PAN means no Demat account. It is also how your broker reports your capital gains to the tax authorities, so keeping it accurately linked to your account matters beyond just compliance.
Your complete residential address, along with the correct PIN code, must be on record. Documents that are accepted as address proof include Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence, and recent utility bills.
What trips people up here is not the initial submission but the update. If you shifted to a new city or changed your locality and never informed your broker, your address on record is wrong. Depositories run periodic verification checks, and an outdated address can get flagged during one of these reviews, leading to account restrictions without warning.
The number you register must be active and ideally linked to your Aadhaar. Every OTP, transaction alert, and debit notification for your account goes to this number.
If someone makes an unauthorised transaction in your account, this is where your only real-time alert comes from. Many investors register an old secondary number during account opening and then forget about it. That is a security risk as much as it is a compliance issue.
A verified mobile number also allows you to complete Aadhaar-based OTP verification online, which means you can update KYC, authorise transactions, and manage your account entirely digitally without visiting a branch.
Your email receives contract notes after every trade, account statements, and any regulatory communication from your broker or the depository. It also serves as a second verification layer for online transactions.
One thing worth knowing here: submitting your email and verifying your email are two separate steps. Many investors enter their email ID during registration but never click the confirmation link that gets sent to them. An unverified email does not count as a completed KYC attribute. Check that your email shows as verified in your account profile, not just submitted.
This is the attribute most investors treat casually. It is also the one that creates the most account freezes.
Income range tells your broker what financial segments you are eligible to access. For equity delivery trading, income range has little direct impact. But for F&O trading, Futures and Options, it matters a great deal. SEBI’s framework around investor eligibility for derivatives uses income and net worth as part of suitability criteria. Brokers check your stated income range when determining whether to grant you access to the F&O segment.
Leaving this field blank automatically marks your KYC as incomplete, regardless of whether your other five attributes are correctly in place.
That last point is worth paying attention to. Reactivation is not instant. If a market opportunity comes up on the same day you fix your KYC, you will still miss it. The one working day processing time means acting early always matters.
Neha opens a Demat account online. She uploads her PAN, submits her Aadhaar for address proof, enters her mobile number and email, and completes the verification steps. When she reaches the income range field, it feels like an optional survey question so she skips it and finishes the process.
Three weeks later, she spots a stock she wants to sell before its results announcement. She logs in, places the order, and gets an error. Her account has been frozen for debits due to incomplete KYC.
She calls her broker, learns about the missing income range, fills it in, and her broker submits the update. Her account is restored the next working day. The stock she wanted to sell had already moved by then.
Do not wait for a freeze notice. Check your status today.
For CDSL account holders:
Step 1: Visit easi.cdslindia.com
Step 2: Log in using your Demat account credentials
Step 3: Go to your account profile section
Step 4: Check the KYC attributes listed and confirm all six show as verified
For NSDL account holders:
Step 1: Visit eservices.nsdl.com
Step 2: Log in with your Demat account details
Step 3: Navigate to the KYC Attributes section
Step 4: Review each attribute and confirm verification status
Not sure which depository you are with? Your Demat account number tells you. If it starts with IN, you are with NSDL. If it is a 16-digit number made entirely of digits, you are with CDSL.
If any attribute shows as missing or unverified, contact your broker immediately and submit the relevant document or information.
Aspect | NSDL | CDSL |
Online portal | eservices.nsdl.com | easi.cdslindia.com |
Account number format | Starts with IN | 16-digit numeric |
Update method | Through registered DP | Through registered DP or CDSL portal |
Attribute check available online | Yes | Yes |
Reactivation after update | 1 working day | 1 working day |
Both depositories follow the same SEBI mandate and the same reactivation timeline. The portals look different but the rules are identical.
Six attributes. All of them mandatory. Miss one and your account stops working at a time you cannot afford.
The KYC process for a Demat account is not difficult. What gets investors in trouble is assuming some fields are optional when they are not, or updating details in one place but not in the depository system. Take five minutes today to log in to the CDSL or NSDL portal and confirm all six attributes show as verified. That five minutes is worth far more than a call to your broker on a day when markets are moving.
If you’re planning to start investing, you can open a demat account with Alice Blue and get started.
Name, PAN, complete address with PIN code, mobile number, email ID, and income range. These are mandated by SEBI and enforced through both NSDL and CDSL.
Your shares stay in the account and are completely safe. You cannot sell, transfer, or pledge them until the freeze is lifted after your KYC is updated.
No. Income range is one of the six mandatory KYC attributes. It also directly affects your eligibility for F&O segment access, which brokers assess using your stated income.
Your trading rights are restored within one working day of your broker confirming the updated details with the exchange and depository.
Check your account number. NSDL account numbers start with IN. CDSL account numbers are 16 digits and contain only numbers.
No. Passport, voter ID, driving licence, and utility bills are also accepted. Aadhaar is preferred because it enables instant online verification through OTP.
No annual renewal is required. You must update your details whenever something changes, such as your address, phone number, or income bracket, to keep your account compliant.
